Augmented Reality Project

Showing an interest in virtual and augmented reality I chose to create an augmented reality resource linked to Wales High School. In my resource I included items around the school that would be of interest to new students to inform them about the school. For example, an icon for the "Staying Safe" box used by students to anonymously inform teachers of any concerns.

I designed this resource in Blippar and included the school map as the trigger image, that opens the Wales High School resource when scanned in the app. To view this, download the Blippar app and enter the following test code '1069761' under settings.

I have received extremely positive feedback for this resource from teachers as well as fellow students. This feedback gives me great satisfaction as it is one of the key reasons I embraked on the BTEC in ICT in which I went on to acheive a Distiction*.

What Is Virtual and Augmented Reality?

Virtual reality is the process of creating a computer generated simulation of a three dimensional environment that a user can interact with in a real or physical way using special electronic equipment such as a virtual reality headset and gloves. It allows a designer to create a virtual world; an environment which isn't real but feels very real to users experiencing the world through virtual reality equipment.

Augmented reality is the manipulation of reality that is experienced by people. It places virtual objects into the real environment that can be seen through a smartphone or tablet camera. Scanning a trigger image or location marker initiates the appearance of virtual objects.

Example: Users can place a virtual dinosaur into a novel by first taking an image of a page to act as the trigger. When this image is scanned the dinosaur appears in the novel.
